Market Opportunity
Most bluetooth speakers on the market prioritize portability in a single unit over sound quality. I wanted to create a pair of speakers that would give high quality sound and split the left/right audio channels while leveraging the convenience of bluetooth.
Form Development
After exploring a variety of forms, I decided on a simple, boxy shape that reflects the traditional look of high-quality bookshelf speaker pairs.
Physical UI Development
Since I was creating two separate units that needed to interact with one another and utilized a bluetooth connection, the user interface was key to the product’s usability.
The final interface has controls for power, volume, bluetooth connection, play / pause, and a unique selecter that changes the behavior of the speakers. On “single” mode, each speaker acts as an individual bluetooth speaker and each can pair with a separate device. In “stereo” mode, the left and right audio channels are split between the two speakers. Finally, in “pair” mode, the speakers play both audio channels from a single source, allowing you to play music in multiple adjacent rooms from one device.
Charging Feature
In order to take full advantage of the wireless benefit of bluetooth, the speakers charge by being set on top of an inductive charging puck. This allows them to be picked up and moved easily without needing to unplug them from the charger first.
